Types of Particles
TYPES OF PARTICLES
As we discussed earlier in my blog about atoms, particles come under many types based on their behaviour and utility. Electrons are elementary particles, meaning that they are not further divided into any components. However, that's not the same with protons and neutrons. These particles are called subatomic particles, which means that they can be further divided into quarks and gluons. Therefore, these particles are divided into 3 main types- fermions, hadrons and bosons.
Fermions consist only of elementary particles. These particles are further divided into leptons and quarks.
Quarks are of 6 types. They are:
- Up quarks
- Down quarks
- Top quarks
- Bottom quarks
- Charm quarks
- Strange quarks
- Electrons
- Muons
- Electron Neutrino
- Muon Neutrino
- Tau Particle
- Tau Neutrino
Hadrons are further divided into mesons and baryons.
Baryons include:
- Protons
- Neutrons
- Lambda Particles
- Positive Pion
- Negative Kaon
Bosons are messenger particles that carry the 4 fundamental forces of the universe and light.
The types of bosons are:
- Photons
- Gravitons( just a theory)
- Gluons
- W+ bosons
- W- bosons
- Z bosons
- Higgs bosons
We collect information about these particles from particle accelerators such as the famous Large Hadron Collider. These accelerators split and combine atoms to make or destroy new types of particles.
By the way, now that we got to know about atoms and particles, we understood the basic information about quantum physics. This is just not it, there are much more things to learn!
